Can I import my Australian credit history into the UK?

James

I have just returned to the UK after 8.5 years in Australia, I am a UK citizen by birth. Is it possible to transfer my Australian credit history or to ensure this information is taken into account when requiring a credit check. In Australia I own two properties, have never missed any mortgage payments and have an exemplary record. In the UK, having been absent for 8.5 years, I have nothing and this is proving problematic.

While we can't link up your UK and Australian credit histories officially, what you could do is apply for a paper copy of your Australian credit report and offer it to any UK-based lenders you apply to, to show them that you're a responsible and reliable borrower. You could also add a note to your UK credit report along the same lines. Simply send the note to us, once you've obtained a copy of your UK report, telling us the wording you'd like us to use. If you haven't done so already, contact your local council and register your name on the electoral roll. This will at least give you a footing on which to build your new credit history here. If you don't have a UK bank account already, set one up as soon as you can. Banks now register details about their customers' overdraft facilities with credit reference agencies like Experian, so as long as you stay in the black, you'll collect further positive information on your credit report, which will certainly give your chances of getting new credit a major boost.
