Hi, in March 2007 my wife left me. I was left with my 8-year-old son for a year until March 2008. I struggled to pay the bills in the hope we may reconcile, at which time, after seeking professional help, I declared myself bankrupt. My bankruptcy has now passed and I have been told that if I place these notes onto my credit reference file for organisations to view it may help along with a copy of my certificate of discharge, is this correct? During my year of bankruptcy I have managed to pay my mortgage and not accrue any arrears so I still have a mortgage in place and up to date.

Gary,
I think you’ve been given very good advice. Adding a note to your credit report to explain extenuating circumstances like these will make sure that any lender you apply to in the future is aware of the difficulties you have experienced and how you’ve behaved responsibly throughout as far as your finances are concerned. Lenders know that a significant proportion of people who get into financial difficulties do so because of a sudden change in personal circumstances, which would leave most people in a financial pickle. Simply send your note (of up to 200 words) to our Customer Support Centre and we’ll let you know as soon as we’ve added it to your credit report. Your bankruptcy discharge should be noted on your report automatically, but do check this and, if it isn’t, send your discharge certificate to our Customer Support Centre so they can update it for you.
