Can my UK credit history be transferred to the US?

James

I am an American who has lived in the UK for the past six years. Now I am going back to the US and would like my UK credit history transferred to my US credit history. Is there a way I can do that?

Peter, Guildford

Peter,

I’m sorry to say that credit reference agencies (called ‘credit bureaux’ in the US) cannot transfer credit reports between the UK and US at the moment, for various reasons. This means that, once your have moved back Stateside, your only chance of benefitting from your UK credit history is by ordering a printed copy of your UK report from us before you leave, taking it with you to the US and offering it to any US lenders you seek credit from. While this may sound cumbersome, it should help you and you’ll find that once you opened a few lines of credit in the US, your UK credit history will quickly become redundant. I certainly hope that is the case anyway – good luck.
